Anna and Chris have built a quiet life for themselves, running Swallow's Nest, a guesthouse for backpackers in rural New Zealand. Chris' death in a freak auto accident is unexpected, but Anna finds the secrets that unfold from his will even more startling. The story swells to include many well-drawn characters, including Catherine, a newcomer to their town who just happens to be connected to Chris' past; Mattie, a law-school dropout with an old soul who helps Anna unearth some history; and Rosie, Chris' long-lost daughter, who is fighting demons of her own. While the first half is slow and Anna's initial reasons for exploring the past are weak, the tale gets better and tighter as it goes, fleshed out with more external conflict, flashing back to explore Chris' history, his relationship with Catherine, and then tying Rosie's journey in with the other characters in a sentimental, but not overly sweet, ending. -- manuscript review by Publishers Weekly, an independent organization
Crisp, well crafted, and mature. First the language comes alive, then the characters and the plot - always a telltale sign of elite writing. Because, there is art here, the reader gets to first live inside the language: then become engaged in the narrative. Both are cozy places to live in this well-told story. Unhurried conceptual space is thus provided for the reader's mind to roam around in. Pace becomes an independent variable. Indeed, there is no need to worry about any structural elements here at all, for the narrative is in the deft hands of a craftsman. The descriptions are exacting; the feel is high quality. This writer can make any story interesting. Five Stars is not enough. -- Amazon Top Reviewer
Lesley Curnow lives for six months of the year in a cabin by the sea in the far north of New Zealand and the rest of the time on a canal boat on the Kennet and Avon canal near Bath. She and her partner Peter love to wander the world. Between times, writing keeps her out of mischief.
